The MV Petrel, resting off the southern coast of Western Australia, offers a rewarding wreck dive for those who appreciate history and artificial reefs. We love its intact structure, a real testament to the cold, often turbulent Southern Ocean, which has preserved it remarkably well. Dropping down, you’ll find the bridge largely intact, a rare sight, and the stern section holds particular interest with its propeller still in place. Schools of trevally often swirl around the superstructure, and we’ve spotted impressive dhufish lurking in the shadows. The site suits divers comfortable with colder water and moderate currents, perfect for those who enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies of a working vessel turned into a thriving ecosystem. Keep an eye out for the colourful nudibranchs that cling to the metal, a surprising splash of colour against the rusted steel.
