HMBS SAN SALVADOR - Andros

The HMBS San Salvador, just off Andros, is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to. It’s an old Bahamian patrol boat, 18.9 meters long, sitting upright and pretty much intact. You’re not going deep here, which is part of its charm – it’s a shallow dive, barely kissing the surface at some points, making it fantastic for extended bottom times or even a snorkel on a calm day. We love how accessible the whole thing feels. You can swim right through the wheelhouse, checking out the control panel, and peek into the crew quarters. It’s not just an empty shell; the wreck still has a distinct ship-like character. Over the years, it’s become home to all sorts of critters. We’ve seen big schools of grunt hovering around the bow, damselfish flitting in and out of the railings, and sometimes a grumpy parrotfish munching on the algae growth. Our favourite is spotting the smaller stuff, like the cleaner shrimp tucked into crevices or a tiny blenny peeking out from a porthole. It’s a superb spot for underwater photographers looking for an easy, well-lit wreck with plenty of small subjects.
