TROPIC ACE - Andros

The Tropic Ace, just off Andros, is a real trip back in time. We love this wreck because it’s not some deep, dark behemoth. She was a motor vessel, sunk by Hurricane Betsy in 1969, and she now rests in a paltry 3 metres of water. It’s a snorkel site really, though we’ve spent hours freediving her. What you get here is pure sunlight filtering through the masts and hull, illuminating everything. You can actually swim right through the wheelhouse, which is pretty cool, feeling the slight current push you gently. Schools of snapper and sergeant majors dart in and out of the corroded metal, seemingly unafraid. We’ve spotted a nurse shark or two lounging under the bow, completely unbothered by us. It’s an easy, relaxed dive for anyone who wants to explore a piece of history without the need for tanks, just pure, simple wreck exploration. Our favourite time to visit is early morning, before the boat traffic picks up, when the water is mirror-calm and the light is soft.
