Boka di Tolo - Klein Bonaire

We’ve spent a lot of time on Klein Bonaire, and Boka di Tolo regularly makes our shortlist for a reason. It’s got this fantastic, gentle slope that starts shallow and just keeps giving, down to about 25 metres before it levels off. What we love here is the sheer density of the reef, even in the shallows. You’ll be finning along, maybe 8-10 metres deep, and the coral structures are already enormous, bursting with sponges and gorgonians. Keep an eye out for hawksbill turtles munching away, they’re pretty common here, and we’ve often spotted Caribbean reef squid hovering, changing colours right before our eyes. Our favourite part is the wall section a little further out. It’s not a dramatic drop, but the overhangs create these perfect little hideouts for bigtooth cardinalfish and rusty gobies. We’ve even seen a few tiger groupers here, just lurking in the shadows. For photographers, the light penetration is excellent, making the vibrant purples and yellows of the sponges really pop. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration rather than a speedy swim-through, great for divers who appreciate the finer details of a healthy reef.
