La Machaca - Klein Bonaire

La Machaca, on Klein Bonaire's northern side, is one of those sites we always try to hit, especially on a calm morning. It’s got a gentle slope, starting around 10 metres, that just keeps on giving as you drift along. We love the way the reef here is dotted with huge brain coral formations, almost like underwater sculptures, and the patches of yellow pencil coral really pop against the deeper blues. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff – we've spotted Cherub Pygmy Angelfish here more often than anywhere else, flitting amongst the common wiry feather hydroids. You'll often see loggerhead turtles cruising by, completely unfazed, and the schoolmasters hang around in thick shoals. The site is great for photographers who like to take their time, and it rarely gets crowded. Drift dives are the way to go here, just let the gentle current carry you. La Machaca is for divers who appreciate a relaxed pace and a healthy, sprawling reef, perfect for spotting both the big and the minute.
