ORO VERDE - Grand Cayman

Oro Verde isn't Grand Cayman's deepest wreck, but it's one of our favourites for a relaxed afternoon dive, especially if you’re looking to linger. This 53-meter motor vessel started its life as a drug runner before customs seized it, then eventually sank it in 1980 to become an artificial reef. You can really feel that history when you’re down there, exploring the engine room or swimming through the cargo holds. The wreck sits upright in just 15 meters of water, making it perfect for longer bottom times and really soaking in the atmosphere. We love seeing the schooling horse-eye jacks that often swirl around the mast, and there’s always a good chance of spotting a green moray eel peeking from a crevice. Look closely, and you’ll notice the delicate lace corals that have started to colonise the metal, softening its edges. It’s a site that suits pretty much everyone, from newer divers getting comfortable with wrecks to seasoned pros who just want to chill out and photograph the resident critters. The gentle depth means the light penetration is fantastic, really bringing out the blues and greens. Go mid-morning for the best visibility before the afternoon currents sometimes pick up a little.
