MECOSTA - Sosua & Puerto Plata

The *Mecosta* isn't a deep dive, sitting in a mere two metres of water, but it’s definitely one of our favourite shore dives in Sosua. We love how accessible it is, especially for those looking for something a bit different without needing a boat. This old dredge, sunk by a hurricane in 1971, is surprisingly intact. You can easily spend an hour finning around its massive metal hull, exploring the open sections where the machinery used to be. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, the sunlight penetrates right to the wreck, illuminating the schools of sergeant majors and snapper that weave through its skeletal remains. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into the crevices; we've often spotted a few peeking out. The *Mecosta* is a gentle introduction to wreck diving, perfect for photographers or those who just want a relaxed, long bottom time. It’s also a great spot to practice buoyancy in very shallow water.
