Dr. Grooms Garden - Southwest Coast

Jake’s Place on Little Corn Island is one of those spots we always make time for. It’s not about dramatic drop-offs or big pelagics here, it’s about the details, the slow dive. We often find ourselves descending onto the top of the reef at 12 metres, then drifting along a surprisingly narrow, 100-metre long coral strip that’s only about 6 metres wide. It feels like swimming along a busy city street, but for fish. The visibility averages around 16 metres, which is perfectly good for taking in the dense coral growth. We’ve spent whole safety stops watching the Chalk Bass dart around the crevices in the great star coral and spotting the almost-invisible Key Worm Eels poking their heads out. Keep an eye out for the Lettuce Coral formations, they’re quite impressive and provide cover for schools of juvenile snapper. We also regularly see some decent-sized hogfish rooting around. Our best dives here have been in the morning, before the winds tend to pick up, leaving the water glassy and the light just right for photography. It’s an easy dive, maxing out at 16 metres, perfect for newer divers or those who just want to relax and observe.
