The Maze - Utila

The Maze, it’s a name that conjures images, and Utila’s version absolutely delivers. We love this site for its genuine feeling of exploration. Drop down, and you’re instantly greeted by a series of narrow swim-throughs and tunnels carved into the reef. It’s not a deep site, probably topping out around 15 metres or so, making it perfect for lingering. The real joy comes from navigating these passageways. Light shafts pierce through the openings, creating these incredible, almost ethereal beams that ripple with the surge. You’ll often find yourself sharing these tight spaces with sleepy parrotfish or a lurking coral scorpionfish, perfectly camouflaged against the rock. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too; goldspot gobies often perch on coral heads, and we’ve seen spaghetti eels poking their heads from sandy patches. Our favourite memory is coming face-to-face with a curious angelfish in one of the wider chambers, seemingly just as surprised to see us. This place is great for divers who enjoy taking their time, peeking into every nook and cranny, and aren’t afraid of a good squeeze. It’s a sensory experience, the feeling of the rock walls close around you, the sound of your own bubbles echoing slightly.
