COLONIAL BOY - Kadavu & Great Astrolabe Reef

Colonial Boy is a fantastic example of what happens when a wreck becomes a home, and we absolutely love it. This old yacht, run aground way back in 1980, has spent decades being reclaimed by the reef. What you get now is less a stark wreck and more a living sculpture, draped in soft corals and patrolled by a host of reef fish. Head down, and you'll find the hull completely overgrown, a mosaic of purples, pinks, and greens. Swarms of tiny glassfish often obscure parts of the structure, parting just enough for you to peek inside the former cabins. We've seen some absolutely massive moray eels here, tucked deep into shadowy crevices, and the occasional whitetip reef shark cruises by the deeper sections. It’s not a penetration dive, but there’s enough structure to explore around and through that keeps things interesting. Visibility is usually superb, letting you appreciate the scale of the wreck against the deep blue. We’d suggest going in the late morning, as the sun at that angle really makes the soft corals glow. It's an easy dive, perfect for any diver who appreciates the beauty of nature taking over.
