Harness Reef - Kadavu & Great Astrolabe Reef

Harness Reef is one of those places we often talk about when someone asks for a Fijian wreck with a bit of a twist. It isn’t just a ship on the seabed, it’s a living, breathing part of the reef now, a full-on coral playground. You’ll drop down onto the top of the wreck, maybe 15 metres, and immediately notice the sheer density of growth. Hard corals have completely encased sections of the hull, and soft corals pulse in the gentle surge, particularly along the deeper parts. We love exploring the deeper sections of the wreck, down around 25 metres. That’s where you’ll find the real action: schools of snapper and fusiliers that swirl around the structure, occasionally parting to reveal a grey reef shark cruising by. Look closely in the nooks and crannies – we’ve seen moray eels peeking out, and the occasional lionfish hovering dramatically. It’s an easy dive, current-wise, making it perfect for photographers or anyone who wants to take their time soaking it all in. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light really brings out the colours of the corals.
