Ngerechong Drop-off - Rock Islands

Ngerechong Drop-off holds a special place for us in Palau. It’s got a totally different vibe from the usual Pelagic-heavy sites. Think about it: a wall dive that feels like a treasure hunt. We love dropping in here, letting the current nudge us along, and just *looking*. Not just out into the blue, but *into* the wall. Every crevice, every overhang, seems to hide something. Our favourite trick is to take it slow, really slow, on the way down. Keep an eye out for those tiny gobies – the Moorea and Emery’s Pygmygobies are always a treat, often sharing a burrow with a watchful shrimp. We’ve spent whole safety stops just watching the Spotted and Humphead Unicornfish graze, their colours popping against the darker coral. The Staghorn coral here is healthy, forming intricate structures where juvenile fish dart about. You’ll find schools of beautiful fusiliers here, not in massive, sun-blocking numbers, but enough to create a shimmering backdrop. The Sponsal Cone, if you’re lucky enough to spot one, is a reminder of the quiet hunters on the reef. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the small stuff, the hidden wonders, and a good, strong torch. It’s not about big pelagics, it’s about micro-worlds.
