Castaway Island - Iron Bottom Sound

Forest (N) on Klein Bonaire is a site we’ve always held a soft spot for, particularly if you’re looking for a relaxed, shallow dive. Forget the deep stuff; the magic here truly happens in the first 15 metres. You’ll drop onto a gentle slope, immediately enveloped by stands of Mustard Hill Coral and Great Star Coral, forming what feels like an actual underwater forest. It’s not just a name; the coral here feels denser, more established than many other sites around Klein. Keep your eyes peeled for the smaller residents. We’ve had fantastic luck spotting Banded Basslets darting into crevices and the surprisingly elegant Molly Miller blennies perched on coral heads. The Caribbean Reef Squid often glide by in the bluer water, their colours shifting with mesmerizing speed. And yes, the black corals are definitely a draw, adding an unusual texture to the vibrant reefscape. This site is perfect for photographers, or anyone who just wants to slow down and truly absorb the details of a healthy Caribbean reef. We’d suggest going in the morning; the light filtering through the shallower corals is just beautiful.
