This remote volcanic island, jutting out of the East Sea, offers a genuinely unique perspective on temperate diving. We're talking dramatic underwater topography, where ancient lava flows have sculpted impressive walls and swim-throughs, all covered in a dense carpet of kelp and sea lettuce. The visibility here is often surprisingly good, especially compared to some mainland sites, letting you appreciate the scale of it all. Forget your tropical fish ID charts; Ulleungdo is all about the hardy, beautiful species that thrive in cooler waters. We’ve spotted everything from curious Japanese pinecone-fish tucked into crevices to large schools of California yellowtail cruising past. While "beginner" is listed, some sites can have a bit of a current, so it pays to be comfortable in moving water, though your guide will always pick the best conditions. Dokdo
Dokdo is a tricky one, and not just because of the currents. It’s a bold choice for a dive trip, a bit of an adventure to get there, and for us, that’s part of the appeal. You’re not just diving; you’re exploring somewhere few divers ever reach. We love the sheer walls here, dropping into the blue. Visibility can be epic on a good day, 20 metres isn't unheard of, and when it is, you’ll see shoals of California yellowtail cruising by. Look close at the rock faces for tiny jewel anemones clinging on, flashes of colour in the otherwise stark volcanic landscape. We’ve spotted giant octopus tucked into crevices, their eyes watching you with unnerving intelligence. The currents can be fierce, making for a challenging drift, but they also bring in the bigger stuff. Our pick for a top experience? Getting swept along a wall while keeping an eye out for a passing dory, then finning into a sheltered eddy to watch beadlet anemones pulse. This isn't a beginner's site; it’s for experienced divers who appreciate raw, untouched marine environments and a bit of an undertaking to get there.

Ulleungdo Island is one of those places that feels like it’s at the edge of the world, and diving here definitely reinforces that. The island itself is volcanic, all dramatic cliffs and ancient forests, and that ruggedness extends below the surface. We love the sheer basalt columns that drop straight down into the deep, forming incredible swim-throughs and overhangs. It’s a completely different vibe from your typical tropical reef. What you’ll see here isn’t about big pelagics, it’s about the surprising abundance in the nooks and crannies. We often find Japanese pinecone-fish tucked into crevices, their scales like tiny golden armour. Keep an eye out for the jewel anemones, they add splashes of vibrant colour against the dark rock. The smaller stuff really shines here – the fat-handed snapping shrimp are always busy, and the hitchhiker amphipods are endlessly fascinating to watch. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, when the sun penetrates the water, it illuminates the walls beautifully. This spot really suits divers who appreciate unique geology and finding beauty in the smaller, more unusual critters. We'd suggest going in late summer or early autumn for the most settled conditions.
