GRAND BETELGEUSE - Flic en Flac & West Coast

The Grand Betelgeuse isn't just a hunk of metal; it’s a time capsule, sitting upright at 35 metres. We love how the story of its grounding – engine trouble driving it onto the reef back in '77 – adds to the atmosphere. As you descend, the sheer scale hits you first. This was a proper bulk carrier, 168 metres long, and even now you can make out the cavernous cargo holds and the vast superstructure. Our favourite part has to be exploring the bridge area, where schools of resident snapper and fusiliers often swirl so thick they momentarily block the light. We'd suggest taking a moment to hover and just watch the movement. Down at this depth, the light takes on a beautiful, muted blue. You'll find plenty of lionfish tucked into crevices and morays peeking out. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, peering into the shadows. Stronger currents can whip through here, so be ready for that, especially if you’re planning to circumnavigate the stern. This wreck is perfect for experienced divers who appreciate history and the quiet, deep beauty of a large, intact vessel now fully claimed by the ocean.
