With 269+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales and great white sharks - Smits Reef offers some of Cape Town & Western Cape's richest reef diving. Water ranges 14-16°C, warmest February, March, April.
Smits Reef is a solid shore dive, accessible from the rocks near Cape Point. You'll often find it busy with local divers, and for good reason: it’s a reliable spot for seeing red roman, hottentot, and even the occasional shy shark tucked into the kelp. The topography is mostly granite boulders and kelp forests, creating plenty of hiding spots. It’s a good choice for newer divers looking for an easy entry and a chance to spot some of False Bay's resident fish without going too deep.
