PORLOCK HILL (FWD SECTION) - Larnaca

You know, for a wreck that’s practically in the shallows, the Porlock Hill’s forward section has a surprising amount of character. We love how accessible it is, sitting at a maximum depth of two metres, making it perfect for a relaxed snorkel or even a freedive. Built in 1944, this steamship ran aground in 1951 while en route to Port Said, and while the aft section was refloated, the bow stayed put. What you get now is a broken, encrusted hull, draped in algae and home to a surprising number of juvenile fish. We’ve spent many an hour just drifting over the skeletal ribs, spotting blennies peeking out of crevices and small schools of seabream darting through the rusted metal. The light plays beautifully through the shallow water, illuminating the colours of the marine growth. It’s a great spot for photographers keen on natural light and small critters, or just to get your sea legs back after a long flight before tackling something deeper.
