ESPERANZA - Bornholm

Esperanza, off Bornholm, isn't deep – a maximum of 6 metres – but it’s a brilliant wreck dive for that very reason. We love how the shallow depth lets you really soak in the details of this old motor vessel, which ran aground back in 1911 near Vang. The wreck is quite broken up now, sprawled across the rocky seabed, but you can still make out the stern section and parts of the engine room. It’s not about penetration here, more about exploring the scattered ribs and plating, seeing how the Baltic has slowly reclaimed it. Visibility can swing a bit depending on the weather; we’ve had it a bit murky after a strong blow, but on a calm day, the sun filters right down, illuminating the rusty metal. We often find juvenile cod tucked into the nooks, and the eelpout are quite common here, too. For photographers, the way the light plays on the broken hull is fantastic, especially in the late morning. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for newer wreck enthusiasts or anyone who appreciates the quiet history beneath the waves without the pressure of depth.
