HEIMAT - Bornholm

Heimat isn't about tropical fish or dramatic drop-offs, it’s about history you can touch, right here in the Baltic. This old German cargo ship, sunk in 1942, sits in just four metres of water, making it a fantastic shallow dive. We love that it’s so accessible, perfect for newer divers or anyone who just wants a long, relaxed bottom time without worrying about deco. What you'll find is a surprisingly intact wreck for its age and depth. The stern is our favourite part, with the propeller still clearly visible and often shrouded in clouds of tiny, shimmering fish – sprats or juvenile herring, depending on the season. We’ve spent many a dive just tracing the deck structure, imagining the life it once held. Look closely, and you’ll spot a surprising amount of life: crabs scuttling in crevices, flatfish camouflaged on the sandy bottom nearby, and often large schools of cod cruising past the superstructure. The visibility here can be very good, especially on a calm, sunny day, letting you really appreciate the scale of the wreck. Dive it early in the morning for the best light and fewest ripples on the surface.
