HOFFNUNG - Bornholm

Hoffnung is one of those wrecks that just hits differently, a real standout for us in the Baltic. You’re not dropping onto some perfectly preserved ghost ship here. This is a scattered, broken wreck, and that’s precisely its charm. The stern lies mostly intact, still offering glimpses of its original form, but the rest is a jumble of metal and wooden planks, spread across a shallow sandy bottom at just 12 metres. What we love most about Hoffnung is how approachable it is. The shallow depth means fantastic bottom time, perfect for really poking around the debris field. We’ve spent hours here, tracing the outline of the hull, imagining the ship's final moments. Keep an eye out for the resident cod, often found lurking among the larger sections of twisted metal, and the occasional flatfish camouflaged against the sand. The light plays beautifully through the water on sunny days, illuminating the rust-coloured wreckage. It’s an easy, rewarding dive, ideal for those who appreciate history and the slow, quiet exploration of a wreck’s bones, rather than grand, intact structures. We'd suggest going on a calm day; visibility in the Baltic can be temperamental, and you want to really soak in the details.
