JAUNELGAVA - Bornholm

The Jaunelgava is a wreck that really digs its hooks in, a steamship that went down in 1941 and now rests in a manageable 12 metres off Bornholm. We love how accessible this site is, especially for anyone keen to spend some real time exploring a wreck without deep decompression penalties. You’ll find her largely intact, a skeletal frame standing proud on the seabed, her bow and stern still quite distinct, making for easy navigation. Swimming through the hold, you can almost hear the echoes of her working life. Light filters down, illuminating schools of cod that dart between the ribs of the ship, and we’ve often spotted lumpsuckers clinging to the metal plates. Our favourite part is the engine room, always buzzing with blennies and gobies, a real magnet for the smaller stuff. For photographers, the ambient light and the way the metal has corroded into abstract shapes offer fantastic opportunities. It's a superb wreck dive, no matter your experience level, just keep an eye on the local current, which can pick up a bit.
