MIZ-20 - Bornholm

MIZ-20 isn't about tropical fish or endless visibility. This is a cold water wreck, pure and simple, and we love it for its moody, almost ghostly presence. We've spent many a dive here tracing the skeletal remains of what was once a fishing trawler, sunk after hitting a mine in 1944. It sits shallow, just 9 metres, making it perfect for longer bottom times, letting you really absorb the atmosphere. As you descend, the wreck slowly materialises from the green embrace of the Baltic. The wooden hull has mostly decayed, leaving behind the stronger metal components. You can pick out the engine block, the anchor chain snaking across the seabed, and some of the winches. It feels more like an archaeological dig than a recreational dive. Our favourite moments are finding the old portholes, now encrusted with mussels and frequented by blennies. The local cod population treats the wreck like their own private apartment block, often darting between the rusty beams. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history, the quiet beauty of decay, and the surprisingly robust life that makes a home in these colder waters. We usually go early in the morning for the best light penetration and to avoid any surface chop.
