VAERING - Bornholm

There’s a real gravitas to Vaering, a steamship that went down off Bornholm in 1913. You don’t get the huge schools of fusiliers you might find in the tropics, but the sheer history here, sitting at a max depth of 24 metres, gives it a unique pull. We love how much of the wreck is still intact. The bow points proudly towards the surface, and you can still make out the engine room, even some of the holds where cargo once sat. It’s a proper exploration dive, one that suits divers who appreciate a bit of backstory with their dive. The steel structure, now encrusted with mussels and hydroids, provides shelter for cod and scuttling crabs. Poke around the darker corners and you might spot a blenny peering out. For us, the best part is the atmosphere. When the visibility is good, around 10-15 metres, the sunlight filters down, illuminating parts of the deck, giving the whole site a ghostly, almost reverent feel. We’d suggest going in late summer for the best chance of settled conditions. It's a dive that rewards slow, deliberate finning, letting the story of the Vaering unfold around you.
