VINGASAND - Bornholm

Vingasand, off Bornholm, is one of our picks for a deeper wreck dive in the Baltic. She’s a fishing vessel, down since a collision in 1979, and rests upright on a sandy bottom at 42 metres. We love how intact she is, especially the stern, where you can still make out the lines of the fishing gear, now draped with green algae and tiny hydroids. Descent through the often-murky surface layer can be a bit of a plunge into the unknown, but once you hit that thermocline, the water can clear up dramatically. You’ll often find large cod nosing around the superstructure, and schools of pollock darting in and out of the wheelhouse windows. Penetration is possible for experienced wreck divers, though we’d suggest good buoyancy and a strong light. The hold is dark and silty, but reveals the ghost of her working life. It's a site that tells a story, rather than just being a pile of metal, and the colder water means she's preserved well. Definitely one for those who appreciate maritime history and a bit of an adventure.
