WALTER KERDE - Bornholm

The Walter Kerde wreck off Bornholm is a charmer, especially if you’re into history you can actually touch. It’s a shallow dive, just 9 metres, so you get plenty of bottom time to really soak it in. What we love about the Kerde is how intact it still feels. You can clearly make out the mast structure, rising from the deck, and you can swim through parts of the superstructure. It’s not a deep penetration dive, but there’s enough here to explore that it never feels boring. We’ve seen some surprisingly colourful nudibranchs clinging to the metal, and often schools of small fish dart in and out of the openings. The visibility here can be decent on a good day, but even if it’s a bit murky, the wreck’s shape still looms large. Our tip: go on a calm day, when the sun can cut through the water, illuminating the wreck and the little bits of life making a home there. It’s a fantastic site for anyone who enjoys wreck diving without the pressure of depth, or for photographers looking for a dramatic subject.
