WIKING - Bornholm

The WIKING dredger, sunk in 1957, isn’t your typical Danish wreck. For starters, it’s mostly intact, sitting upright at 24 metres. We’re usually pulling ourselves through the current up here, but the WIKING offers a surprisingly sheltered dive, often with decent visibility for the Baltic. You can drop straight onto the bridge, then drift along the deck. Look for the massive dredge bucket still slung over the side. It’s a bit eerie seeing it, a ghost of its working life. The real draw here, for us, is the way nature has reclaimed it. Schools of cod hang out in the open holds, sometimes so many you have to fin around them. We’ve spotted some impressively large flatfish camouflaged on the sandy bottom nearby, too. This isn't a colourful reef dive, obviously, but the atmosphere is something else. It suits divers who appreciate a bit of history and don't mind a slightly chillier dive. Go on a calm day, and it's a wonderfully peaceful exploration.
