WOLGAST - Bornholm

WOLGAST, Bornholm’s shallow, accessible wreck, offers a dive with a real sense of history. This old steamship, sunk in 1945 by a Soviet mine, now lies broken in just 5 metres of water, making it perfect for newer divers or those who prefer longer bottom times without the deco stress. We love exploring the scattered pieces of the hull, the huge boiler, and the engine parts, all draped in a thick carpet of green algae and mussels. Our favourite time to dive Wolgast is on a calm, sunny day. The light penetrates right to the seabed, illuminating the metalwork and the schools of small fish, usually cod and blennies, darting amongst the twisted beams. You’ll feel the subtle current, sometimes a gentle push, sometimes a slight sway, as you fin over the debris field. Keep an eye out for the resident crabs scuttling across the seabed, and the occasional flatfish camouflaged against the sand. It’s a reflective dive, really; you get to see a piece of wartime history slowly being reclaimed by the Baltic Sea.
