La Barge aux Tuiles - Marseille & Calanques
La Barge aux Tuiles, a flat-bottomed barge that sank in the 1960s, is one of our favourite little wrecks in the Calanques. It sits upright, relatively shallow, making it perfect for longer bottom times and a good multi-level dive. We love drifting along the deck, checking out the old crane that’s still mostly intact, draped in colourful gorgonians. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into every nook and cranny; they’re practically residents here. Shoals of barracuda often circle above the mast, especially in the late afternoon. The light can be incredible then, shafts cutting through the water onto the wreck. It’s a very calm dive, ideal for photographers wanting to take their time or newer wreck divers getting comfortable in overhead environments. We’d suggest going on a day with minimal surge, as its exposed position can sometimes make for a bumpy ride, but it's genuinely a rewarding spot.
