Les amphores de Giens - Marseille & Calanques

Les amphores de Giens is a dive site we return to whenever we’re in the Marseille area. It’s not a deep dive, sitting around 20 metres, which means plenty of bottom time to really soak it all in. We love it for the sheer volume of Roman amphorae scattered across the seabed – it’s like diving through an ancient cargo spill frozen in time. You’re not just seeing one or two pots; there are hundreds, some intact, others broken, creating little nooks for conger eels and scorpionfish. Sunlight filters through the Mediterranean blue, highlighting the textures of the encrusted clay. Our favourite part is navigating the fields of amphorae, imagining the ship that lost its cargo here two millennia ago. It’s a gentle drift, perfect for history buffs and photographers alike, and a site that offers a real sense of connection to the past. Go on a weekday morning for the quietest experience.
