FIONA SHELL - Al Hoceima
Fiona Shell is a good one for those who appreciate a proper piece of history on the seabed. She’s an old oil storage hulk, taken down in Gibraltar Harbour back in 1941 by an Italian one-man submarine. The wreck sits at 25m, so it’s a comfortable depth for extended exploration. We love how the hull has been colonised, with schools of glinting damselfish flitting in and out of the skeletal structure. Dropping down, you can feel the slight chill of the Mediterranean even in summer. The visibility here can be decent, letting you pick out the details of her twisted metal. Moray eels often peek out from shadowy crevices, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large groupers patrolling the deeper sections. Our favourite part is navigating the interior, imagining the life she had before that fateful torpedo. It's not a huge wreck, but there’s enough here to keep you engaged for a full dive, especially if you take your time to look for the smaller stuff hiding amongst the wreckage. This site really suits divers who appreciate a wreck with a story.
