PAGAO (POSSIBLY) - Al Hoceima

Pagao, just off Al Hoceima, gives you a proper slice of Mediterranean history. It’s a steamship, sitting upright at a friendly 12 metres, which means plenty of bottom time for exploration. We love how much of the hull and superstructure is still intact; you can really get a sense of its original form, unlike some wrecks that are just scattered debris. Our favourite part is nosing around the engine room, or what’s left of it, where the light plays through gaps in the metal. Visibility here can be brilliant, often 20 metres plus, especially outside of the peak summer months when the bay gets a bit more stirred up. Schools of sea bream and barracuda often hang around the higher sections of the wreck, sometimes so thick they block out the sun for a second. Look closely on the deck plates and you’ll find scorpionfish camouflaged amongst the rust. It’s a site that really suits divers who enjoy a relaxed pace, perfect for photographers or anyone who just wants to soak up the atmosphere of a well-preserved wreck without deep dive demands.
