Cala d'Aiguafreda - Medes Islands

Cala d'Aiguafreda, nestled just a stone's throw from Begur, really shows off the calmer side of the Costa Brava. We often head here when the wind's up elsewhere, and it rarely disappoints. Drop in and you're immediately greeted by the distinctive purple fronds of Neptune's lace swaying gently, a real indicator of the healthy seagrass beds. Keep an eye out for Stout Bobtail Squid camouflaged on the sand, they're masters of disguise and a genuine treat to spot. It's a site that rewards a slow pace. We love drifting through the natural rock formations, checking every crevice for Grohmann's Scaldfish or the Marbled Goby. You'll often see schools of juvenile blue whiting shimmering in the sunlight, and if you're lucky, a Painted Comber will dart past. It's not a deep dive, making it perfect for those who want to really absorb the details rather than chase depth. Our favourite time to visit is early morning, before the boat traffic picks up, when the light filters down just so. You might even catch a glimpse of a Scopoli's Shearwater gliding overhead.
