Calanque de Figuerolles - Medes Islands

Calanque de Figuerolles is a favourite for a specific kind of diver, the one who appreciates the smaller stuff, the nooks and crannies. We love dropping in here on a calm morning, just as the sun starts to properly light the wall. You glide down a sloping reef, perhaps to 15 or 20 metres, and then it’s all about getting your eyes in. We’ve spent whole dives in a single square metre, just watching. Look closely and you’ll find red snapping shrimp tucked into crevices, their antennae waving like tiny metronomes. Painted combers dart between bushy coral, and the occasional seahorse might be clinging to a gorgonian if you’re lucky enough to spot it. We once saw a moonfish here, completely out of place, a real surprise. The sand patches are worth a quick look too, often home to sand horseshoe worms or common brittlestars. This site isn't about big pelagics or dramatic drop-offs; it’s about patience and discovery. We’d suggest bringing a good torch, even on a sunny day, to really illuminate the overhangs where the blotched picarel and Cadenat's rockfish hide. It's a superb second dive, especially after something more energetic.
