Cathédrale - Medes Islands

Cathédrale. The name alone hints at something special, and this site in the Medes Islands absolutely delivers. We love the swim-through that starts around 20 metres. You enter through a narrow crack, and as your eyes adjust to the dim light, the space opens up dramatically. It’s not just a hole in the rock, it’s a genuine cavern, tall and wide, with light filtering down from cracks above, creating those namesake cathedral-like shafts. Look for the red snapping shrimp clicking away in the crevices – you’ll hear them before you see them. We’ve spotted broadnosed pipefish hugging the walls here too, blending in perfectly. The sponges, particularly the black leather sponges, are vibrant and plentiful inside, and outside, the walls are covered in colourful encrusting life. It’s a site that rewards a slow pace, letting your eyes adjust and really taking in the architecture of the place. Best dived on a calm day; strong surge can make the entry a bit challenging. This site is definitely for divers who appreciate dramatic underwater topography and don’t mind a bit of low light.
