Cova de la Reina - Medes Islands

Cova de la Reina, for us, is classic Medes. It’s got that signature Mediterranean cave feel. You push past the initial rocks and the space opens up, a bit like entering a grand, shadowed hall. We love the dramatic light play here; shafts pierce the entrance, creating these shifting patterns on the cave walls, almost theatrical. Keep an eye out for the regulars: Garrupa often loiter in the deeper shadows, big and curious. We’ve seen them eyeball us from a respectable distance more than once. The walls themselves are worth a close look, especially for the Variable Loggerhead Sponges, surprisingly colourful against the grey rock. If you're patient and have a good torch, you might spot a Rufus Snake Eel tucked away, or even a nursehound snoozing on the sandy bottom inside. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration rather than just rushing through. We’d suggest a mid-morning dive to get the best of that entrance light. This is a site for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of cave environments and don't need walls of coral to feel engaged. It’s a good spot for photography, especially playing with ambient light and shadows, and offers a real sense of being inside the island itself.
