Dune - Medes Islands

Dune. Just the name conjures images of rolling sands and, well, that’s exactly what you get – with a twist. This isn’t a coral wonderland, and it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who appreciate the subtle beauty of a sand and seagrass environment, it’s a revelation. We love drifting over the gentle undulations here, keeping our eyes peeled for the unusual residents. We’re talking Atlantic stargazers, perfectly camouflaged, just their eyes poking out. Or the tiny, almost invisible Mediterranean tooth-footed snapping shrimp, doing their thing in the sand. You’ll spot schools of blacktail bream cruising by, and if you’re lucky, maybe a shy sea horse clinging to some seagrass. Our favourite memory from here is watching a conger eel, surprisingly bold, peeking out from a rocky outcrop at the edge of the sand. The light plays beautifully on the rippled bottom, creating a serene, almost meditative dive. This spot is definitely for the slow, observant diver, the one who finds as much joy in a tiny crab as a massive pelagic. We'd suggest going on a calm day; it really lets you soak in the quiet details.
