el Reggio - Medes Islands

El Reggio always makes us smile. You drop onto a sandy bottom at around 18 metres, then follow the reef wall down as it slowly slopes to 30 metres. What we love here is the sheer density of life, particularly in the cracks and overhangs. Look closely and you’ll spot brown combers eyeing you from their rocky hideouts, while saddled seabream flit past in shimmering schools. This is also one of our favourite spots for red coral. It grows in beautiful, intricate bushes, sometimes alongside the otherworldly light-bulb sea squirts. The real show begins as you ascend. The shallower sections are a masterclass in Mediterranean ecology. We’ve seen mauve stingers drifting by, their tentacles trailing, and the sandy patches are often home to scaldfish, perfectly camouflaged. Keep an eye out for dory, their flat bodies almost invisible against the rock. It's a dive that rewards slow exploration, making it perfect for photographers or anyone who just wants to soak it all in. If you're after a site that truly showcases the Medes Islands' conservation efforts, Reggio is a solid pick.
