Grotte Arc en Ciel - Medes Islands

Grotte Arc en Ciel isn't your average Medes Islands dive, and that's exactly why we love it. Forget the dramatic drops of some of the outer walls; this is a cave, and it's all about the light. We're talking about those specific hours, usually late morning to early afternoon, when the sun slices through the water and hits the entrance just right, illuminating the interior in a way that feels almost theatrical. You’ll feel the temperature drop a degree or two as you duck under the overhang, the visibility often settling into that comfortable 15-20 meter range common here. Inside, the reds and oranges of the Devonshire cup corals pop against the darker rock, a real contrast to the usual Mediterranean blues. Look closely for those tiny, almost translucent elliptical file-shells tucked into crevices – they’re easy to miss if you’re not slowing down. While the big pelagics like sperm whales are a rare sighting anywhere, this cave is a reliable spot for painted combers and small rockfish, often lurking in the shadows. We’d suggest a good dive light to really appreciate the deeper corners, though the main show is definitely that sunbeam. It's a dive that rewards patience and a careful eye, perfect for those who appreciate the subtle beauty of a well-lit cavern rather than just open reef.
