The Junker 88 dive is where history and marine life truly collide in the Medes Islands. We love this site not just for the wreck itself, but for how the Mediterranean has completely reclaimed it. You drop down onto the fuselage, usually in good visibility, and the first thing you notice are the schools of saddled seabream darting around the bomb bay. It’s a proper war relic, a German bomber shot down in 1943, and you can still make out the cockpit and the distinctive twin engines, though they’re heavily encrusted. Swimming through the broken sections, you’ll often spot a marbled electric ray settled in the sand nearby or a camouflaged Atlantic stargazer peering up. Look closer at the metal and you'll find tiny Devonshire cup corals, vibrant oranges against the grey. The wreck sits at a comfortable depth for experienced recreational divers, generally around 30 metres, making it accessible for a good bottom time. Our favourite part is exploring the tail section, where curious wrasse and barbier often peek out from behind the corroded plates. It's a fantastic dive for those who appreciate both a tangible piece of history and the bustling ecosystem that now thrives on it. Just watch for occasional currents, which can pick up, especially if you're exploring the more exposed parts of the debris field.

    Safety Notes

Wreck site - avoid penetration without wreck diving certification. Watch for sharp metal and entanglement hazards.
