La drome - Medes Islands

La Drome is one of those Medes sites we keep coming back to, usually because someone in the group wants to feel small. The main draw here is a serious drop-off, a vertical wall that just keeps going. It starts shallow, around 10 meters, and plunges way beyond recreational limits, making it a fantastic deep dive for those qualified. We’ve spent countless hours hovering at 30, 40 meters, just looking out into the blue. The wall itself is just plastered with life, a vibrant tapestry of bushy coral and sponges. Look closely, and you’ll spot axillary sea-bream darting amongst the crevices, and if you’re lucky, a marbled electric ray tucked into a ledge. Our favourite part is often the shallower sections though, where the light really hits the wall. Here, the colours pop and you’ll see schools of blacktail bream, with snapper gliding past. Keep an eye out for dogfish and the occasionally shy thornback skate on the sandy patches at the base of the wall, if you venture a little deeper. We’d suggest hitting La Drome on a calm day, the exposed location can mean a bit of surge, but it’s usually worth the effort for the sheer scale of the place. It’s a site that really makes you appreciate the Mediterranean’s rugged beauty.
