la Ferriola - Medes Islands

La Ferriola is one of our favourites in the Medes, and we find it often gets overlooked for the more famous El Dofí or La Vaca. That’s good news if you ask us; fewer crowds mean more space to really soak it in. You’ll drop onto a sloping reef, initially around 10 to 15 metres, often enveloped by shimmering shoals of pilchard, so dense you sometimes feel like you could swim through a living wall. We love drifting along the wall here, watching for the resident morays peering out from their crevices and the ornate wrasse darting between the rocks. Keep an eye out in the bluer water for barracuda cruising by, and if you’re lucky, a common eagle ray might glide past in the distance. The real magic, though, is in the smaller details: the transparent gobies camouflaged on the rocks, the delicate Mediterranean feather stars clinging to the gorgonians, and the vibrant hues of the Mediterranean tapeweed waving gently in the surge. It’s a site that rewards patience and a keen eye, perfect for photographers or anyone who enjoys a relaxed exploration rather than a high-speed drift.
