Le Chaouen - Medes Islands

Le Chaouen is our favourite wreck dive in the Medes, hands down. We just love how this old cargo ship, sunk in 1971, has become such an integral part of the reef. Dropping down, you feel the weight of its history. The stern sits around 20 metres, while the bow reaches down to 30 metres, offering plenty of scope for different experience levels. Exploring the superstructure is fascinating. We always find ourselves swimming through the intact bridge, imagining its last moments, before drifting over the cargo holds. They’re home now to schools of ornate wrasse, and painted comber peek from every crevice. Look closely, and you’ll spot elliptical file-shells tucked into overhangs. The wreck itself is a magnet for dusky groupers; they’re often just hanging out, unbothered, near the propeller. While we’ve never been lucky enough to see a blue shark here, the resident razorbacks are a real treat, especially when they cruise past slowly. It’s a dive that combines history with vibrant marine life, suiting anyone comfortable with deeper dives and a bit of a current, which can sometimes pick up here.
