L'Enfer de Taillat - Medes Islands

L’Enfer de Taillat, or ‘Hell of Taillat’, sounds a bit dramatic, but it’s a name we've always found suits the site's intense beauty. You drop into a rocky landscape, a jumble of boulders and cracks that feel ancient, like an underwater quarry. We love how the light plays here, especially on a sunny afternoon, dappling through the water and highlighting the purple and orange gorgonian fans clinging to the rock faces. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too. We’ve spotted Alder’s necklace shells tucked into crevices and hooded shrimp scuttling across the sand patches. It’s a site that rewards a slow pace, letting you really explore the nooks and crannies. While it doesn't boast the big pelagics often associated with the Medes, the sheer density of reef fish – think shoals of damselfish and barracuda hanging in the blue – makes it a consistently engaging dive. Our tip: go mid-week if you can. It gets busy, and you want to enjoy the quiet contemplation this place offers.
