Les fromages - Medes Islands

Les Fromages, or "The Cheeses," is one of those Medes Island dives that really gets under your skin. We love it for its complexity, a series of tunnels and swim-throughs carved into the rock. It’s a genuine maze, an almost disorienting experience in the best possible way. Drop down and you’re immediately enveloped by the cool embrace of the tunnels. Sunlight filters in from unexpected angles, turning the water a mottled blue, picking out details on the walls. Keep an eye on those nooks and crannies. We’ve had fantastic luck spotting marbled electric rays tucked away, almost perfectly camouflaged against the rocks. Painted combers dart around the entrances, and common cuttlefish often drift by with an unnerving elegance. Our favourite, though, is finding the Alder’s Necklace Shells, tiny bursts of colour on the darker rock. Dive this site mid-week, early in the morning if you can. It’s less crowded then, giving you more space to really explore the winding passages without feeling rushed. It's an ideal spot for divers who enjoy intricate topographies and a bit of a challenge, those who like to take their time exploring every hidden corner rather than just cruising along a wall.
