Émergence du Bestouan - Medes Islands

Émergence du Bestouan, in the Medes Islands, is one of those sites we always try to hit. It’s a bit of a maze down there, a collection of swim-throughs and small caves that feel more like a secret passage than an open reef. We love pushing through the narrower sections, feeling the slight squeeze of the rock walls, then emerging into pockets of open water where a shaft of sunlight slices through the blue. You’ll often find Cadenat’s rockfish lurking in the shadows, their eyes just glinting, and sometimes a curious Atlantic lizardfish will dart out from under a ledge. The real draw here, for us, is the architecture. It's not about big pelagics, though we have seen grey dolphins pass by on occasion. Instead, it’s the intimate scale, the chance to really explore the nooks and crannies. Keep an eye out for the delicate, feathery fronds of the tall sea pens in calmer spots, and we’ve even spotted a seahorse or two tucked into the bushy coral. This dive suits those who enjoy slow, exploratory diving, folks who get a kick out of discovering what’s around the next corner rather than just cruising along a wall. We’d suggest a good dive light to really appreciate the colours and shadows inside the emergences.
