Moyadons - Medes Islands

Moyadons is a bit of a Medes wildcard, and that’s precisely why we love it. Forget the big, famous caves for a minute; this site gives you a real feel for the exposed side of the islands. We typically drop onto a sloping rocky reef that bottoms out around 20-25 metres, although you can certainly go deeper if you want to explore the sand and rubble for some of the bigger rays or even a blue shark cruising by. The real draw here, for us, is the sheer variety of smaller stuff. You’ll be finning past rocky outcrops adorned with the most incredible variable loggerhead sponges and the delicate fronds of black coral, often finding Grohmann’s scaldfish trying their best to disappear into the gravel. We’ve seen brown combers darting around, those cheeky butterfly blennies peeking out from their holes, and the occasional garrupa keeping a watchful eye. It's a site that rewards patience and a keen eye – you won’t always find the dramatic swim-throughs of other Medes spots, but you’ll feel the energy of the open sea. Keep an ear out for the calls of lesser black-backed gulls and scopoli's shearwaters from above; it adds to the wild Mediterranean atmosphere. We’d suggest this one for divers who appreciate the intricacies of reef life and don't mind a bit of a current.
