OBERON - Medes Islands

The Oberon, for us, is a dive into history with a twist. It's not the deepest wreck out there, bottoming out at just 10 metres, but that’s its charm. This old steamship, sunk way back in 1918, is spread across the seabed, its plates and ribs creating a fascinating habitat for all sorts of critters. We love how the light plays on the scattered debris, illuminating big schools of damselfish that dart between the metal. You’ll find moray eels tucked into crevices, their heads poking out curiously, and often, we spot a big conger eel camouflaged amongst the rusty structure. Our favourite part is swimming through the more intact sections, imagining the ship in its prime. It feels like an archaeological dig, but one where the “artefacts” are alive. Visibility is usually pretty good here, making it a relaxed dive, even if there’s a bit of surge on choppier days. It's a superb spot for photographers wanting to capture both history and marine life without worrying about tricky currents or deep profiles. Just keep an eye out for loose bits of metal; it is a dangerous wreck after all, well over a century old.
