P.T. 555 - Medes Islands

The P.T. 555 is a proper wreck dive, not just a pile of rubble. We’re talking about a torpedo boat, sunk by a mine back in 1944. She sits upright at 46 metres, which means this is one for the experienced trimix crowd, no question. Dropping down, you start to make out the shape, the bow pointing into the blue, and the superstructure still largely intact. It’s got a real eerie atmosphere down there, especially when the light shifts. What we love about the P.T. 555 is how much character the wreck retains. You can trace the lines of the vessel, peer into open hatches. Inside, it’s dark, silty, but the beams of your torch pick out details – pipes, machinery, evidence of its working life. The marine life has really taken hold too, with thick encrustations of sponges and gorgonians on the deck and hull. Look for conger eels poking their heads from the darker recesses and schools of small fish darting in and out of the structure. Our favourite spot is the stern, where the propeller is still clearly visible. It’s a quiet, reflective dive, perfect for those who appreciate history and the slow reclamation of the ocean.
