CLAN APLINE - Cornwall & Devon

The Clan Alpine, near Bolt Tail, is a peculiar dive. At just two metres deep, it’s practically a snorkel, but don’t let that put you off. It’s ideal for less experienced divers or those looking for a relaxing second dive, and it’s especially good for photographers wanting long bottom times and plenty of available light. The wreck itself is quite broken up, but you can still make out the ribs of the hull and the impressive compound engine. We love how the machinery lies exposed to the elements, now completely encrusted with an astonishing variety of anemones and sponges. Visibility here can be a bit variable, but when it’s good, the natural light filtering down illuminates the colourful growth like a spotlight. Look closely, and you’ll spot blennies tucked into crevices and small crabs scuttling over the metalwork. Our favourite time to dive it is on a calm, sunny day when the water is still and the greens and purples of the marine life really pop. It’s a shallow, peaceful exploration, a gentle reminder of the power of the sea and the resilience of life.
