ELISHANNE - Cornwall & Devon

The Elishanne is a small wreck, but she’s got character. We love this site for a relaxed poke-around, especially if you’re new to wrecks or just fancy a shallow potter. Lying at just 5m, she’s a fishing vessel, about 7.3m long, that grounded on the Shag Stone back in 2001 after a fouled prop and a dragging anchor. You can still make out the outline of the wheelhouse and the hull, which is now a haven for all sorts of critters. We’ve spotted gobies peeking from every crevice, blennies darting between the decaying timbers, and plenty of wrasse patrolling the edges. It’s a superb spot for underwater photography, particularly wide-angle shots that capture the wreck against the dappled light filtering down. Our favourite part is the way the light plays on the kelp fronds draped over the bow, giving it a slightly ghostly feel. We’d suggest going at slack water, as even a gentle current can make such a small wreck feel a bit zippy. It’s a great choice for snorkelers too, or divers wanting to extend their bottom time without much faff.
